Brake before break

Author: Leading and Love

The faster you are going, the more difficult it will be to stop, especially if the way seems clear. When we are driving, we are constantly making guesses about the road conditions ahead. Many times our guesses are way off. We are not always aware of potholes, uneven surfaces, or other obstacles until we get close. Depending on our speed, it might be too late to make the necessary adjustments.

Idea #1

Slow down before you lose control. Going full speed all the time isn't natural. It's a lot more difficult to lose control going at a manageable pace where you can observe your surroundings. The faster you go the stricter the requirement to keep your eyes straight ahead. You are more prone to miss important mileposts or worse case, warning signs.

Idea #2

Slow down before you pause. Sudden changes can be harder to manage than gradual ones. In our professional lives, we tend to go all out then wait for vacation time to recuperate. But even before you go on vacation, you should slowly ramp down by reprioritizing and reorganizing. Start packing early. Delegate tasks that are going to bump up against the start of your recess. Easing into your time off can give you more room and time to fully enjoy your break, allowing you to return to your routines a little more refreshed.

Quote #1

“Sometimes we just need a mental vacation. Take a 15 minute break and start planning your next vacation.” -Catherine Pulsifer

Quote #2

“Slow down and everything you are chasing will come around and catch you.” ― John De Paula

Quote #3

“Research shows that we need to take a break and decompress so we can be at our best at work—and at home. Maybe we should ask if the life we’re working so hard to create is fun to live? When’s the last time you disconnected and took a vacation?” -Tina Hallis

Challenge

Next time you plan to take a vacation. Rather than ramping up your work, slowly ramp things down, and ease your way into your vacation.

Affirmation

I want to be my best and taking a break will not hinder me from being my best.
