Good, better, best, bestest?

Author: Leading and Love

Growing up playing basketball, we were told that while we were sleeping, someone else was training. We were told about athletes on the west coast waking up at 6am east coast time to workout to keep up with the east coast athletes who had a three hour lead.

That was motivating for some and not so much for others. Some found the loophole by resorting to the idea that they will never run into those athletes. Others grabbed the lesson and made sure that they never wasted their time in the gym and took whatever opportunity they had to train. The latter is the lesson that carried many of us through college, into our careers and family life.

Idea #1

There is always an opportunity to improve. Know what you need to improve and then keep improving until you reach your limit. If you have passed a defined limit, either resort to that limit, or create your own. You might have to strive for "bestest" instead of just the best.

Idea #2

You are responsible for defining your limit. Decide what your enough is and pursue until you reach it. If you reach it, then decide whether you want to push beyond or stop there.

Quote #1

“It is not enough to do your best; you must know what to do, and then do your best.” -W. Edwards Deming

Quote #2

“Everyone has limits. You just have to learn what your own limits are and deal with them accordingly.” -Nolan Ryan

Quote #3

“You must accept that you might fail; then, if you do your best and still don't win, at least you can be satisfied that you've tried. If you don't accept failure as a possibility, you don't set high goals, you don't branch out, you don't try - you don't take the risk.” -Rosalynn Carter

Challenge

Take stock of your achievements thus far. Are they what you have always wanted? Is there more or is that it? Decide what to do next.

Affirmation

I set my own limits.
