A habit is a routine behavior. What you do each morning when you first wake up is a habit. The first thing you do when you arrive at the office is a habit. What you do at the dinner table, what you do at the gym, or what you do when you are driving are all habits. These are behaviors that you don’t have to think about or even coordinate. They’re natural and almost effortless.
They originate from our core values - what we hold true about ourselves and the world around us. They are manufactured through motivation and discipline. Habits are then showcased through our skills. A professional pitcher at the top of his game showcases his work regiment through his performance on the mound. A messy person showcases his level of cleanliness via a messy room.
Idea #1
Habits lead to skills. If you want to be good at something, make a habit of the elements that build up to the skill. If you want to be a good writer, make a habit of writing everyday.
Idea #2
Habits are built naturally by doing routine things that we value, even debilitating ones. Habits are default behaviors so breaking “bad” habits requires developing new routines.
Quote #1
“All big things come from small beginnings. The seed of every habit is a single, tiny decision.” -James Clear
Quote #2
“Habit is the intersection of knowledge (what to do), skill (how to do), and desire (want to do).” -Stephen R. Covey
Quote #3
Habits change into character. -Ovid
