Teaching

Author: Leading and Love

Teaching is one of the most connective forces we have among human beings. It moves knowledge from one locale to another. Perhaps the first thing that comes to mind when we hear teaching is being in a classroom. Throughout history storytelling remains a popular form of teaching. Storytelling served many purposes: entertainment, preserving culture, education, infusing moral standards, and so on. Just like storytelling, teaching bares us to the audience.

Idea #1

In our homes, we have the opportunity to touch various facets of teaching. Children can gain both tacit and explicit knowledge from their kin. Explicit knowledge is how we are educated in school. Tacit knowledge is gained from being in the moments - being in the garage with dad, going on a hike with mom, sitting by the fireplace with grandparents, or being on the playground with siblings. In these moments, we learn how to be meticulous, how to be observing, how to communicate, or how to compete.

Idea #2

Great teachers are great learners. Parents who are willing to learn from their children are able to connect with, direct and protect their children. Teachers who seek to learn from their students are able to provide the right learning opportunities that will empower those students.

Quote #2

“A teacher affects eternity; he [or she] can never tell where his influence stops.” -Henry B. Adams

“Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.” -Benjamin Franklin
